United Grand Lodge of NSW & ACT

Freemasonry is a time-honoured and globally recognised fraternal organisation that traces its roots back to the medieval stonemason guilds. It is built upon the foundational principles of brotherly love, relief, and truth; and promotes personal growth, social responsibility, and moral uprightness among its members. The teachings of Freemasonry are conveyed through a series of stories and symbols, emphasising the importance of virtue, integrity, and community service. The United Grand Lodge of New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory stands as a beacon of Masonic tradition, fostering unity, knowledge, and camaraderie. Established with the mission to uphold and advance the values of Freemasonry, and serving as a guiding light, ensuring that the Masonic tenets are preserved and passed down through generations.

Formation of Lodge Nowra Unity No 60

In October 2004 a committee consisting of representatives of all Craft lodges meeting in Nowra was formed to consider whether those Lodges should consolidate or continue as separate lodges. In January 2005 the members of Lodge Abercorn No 60 and Lodge Shoalhaven enthusiastically supported consolidation. It was agreed that the new Lodge
would be named Lodge Nowra Unity No 60, retaining the number of the oldest Lodge in Nowra, Lodge Abercorn. The Lodge was consecrated on the 30 th April 2005 with the then GM, MWBro Anthony Lauer officiating at the ceremony.

It could be noted that Lodge Abercorn was formed in 1878 with its first meeting at the Central Hotel Nowra. The first official visit of a GM was 1885, MWBro Harman J Tarrant.

The foundation stone of the Nowra Masonic Temple was laid on the 29 th March 1890 by then Pro. GM Rt WorBro Tarrant with appropriate Masonic ceremony.
